As a young child, Joseph Pilates suffered with asthma among with several other conditions. Interested in the Greek ideal of man being balanced in mind, body and spirit he embarked upon developing his own system built around this very principle. At the outbreak of WW1, and whilst confined as an enemy in Germany, Joseph began refining his ideas by rigging springs to hospital beds and working with the resistance of his own body. 1926 saw the opening of his first fitness club, where many of his clients were those working at the New York City Ballet. As his ideas grew and 'Pilates' was fully formed, it began spreading across and out of America, and emerging around the world. Now, even after his death, pilates remains a global phenomenon.

While both forms of practise offer stress relief, strengthening, control and endurance, the biggest difference being the emphasis of spiritual connection in yoga. If you enjoy a structured workout with as much of a cardio component desired and a focus on core stability...then Pilates is for you!

PILATES...What is it? 
Ultimately, pilates aims to strengthen your entire body with an emphasis on core strength. Done on a mat, or using specialised equipment it has something to offer for absolutely everyone! Pilates will improve your posture, improve your muscle tone, strengthen your abdominals, improve balance and improve your joint mobility. It will also relieve stress and tension by focussing on your mind-body connection. While in a pilates class, your mind needs to be constantly aware of your breathing and how your body is moving. Pilates compliments other forms of training by preventing injury and providing the whole body with strength and flexibility. There is also evidence that pilates can provide pain relief for back pain as well as other conditions such as fibromyalgia and osteoporosis.

Hannah Cable 

It was through her training as a professional dancer, that Hannah discovered her love for Pilates. Hannah has now been practising pilates (reformer and mat) for 6 years and teaching for almost 2. Whilst sustaining a serious knee injury 3 years ago she was left unable to walk, and it was pilates that saved her. Studying at the infamous Body Control Pilates Centre in Tottenham Court Road,  she gained her Pilates Level 3 certification.

'My passion for teaching blossomed when I realised just how important pilates is, and how much it can really benefit absolutely anyone. Since, it has become my mission to try and spread and teach these benefits, delivering lessons to clients who have ranged from the ages of 18-80 and who are of varying different levels of fitness.'

Hannah taught Mat classes freelancing in studios in Greenwich, Worcester Park, Friern Barnet, Chislehurst, Hammersmith and Muswell Hill and hosts her own weekly Pilates class at the Academy Studios in Camden. Additionally, Hannah has also worked privately with clients on a 1:1 and 2:1 basis within a solo and duet lesson environment. 

Hannah now also regularly films for Body Control Pilates Central, a global online hub for pilates tutorials and videos filmed with expert pilates teachers from around the world. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

- Degree in Theatre Dance

- Body Control Pilates Level 3 Matwork Qualification 

- Body Control Certified in Advanced Mat work. 

- Level 3 Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs)

- CPR Certification 

- Member of the Body Control Pilates Association 

- Body Control certified in teaching Pilates for Osteoporosis and bone health.
